Coffee Drinking Linked to Longer Life

           The AARP tested 400,000 healthy men and women between the ages of 50 and 71 for
around thirteen years and 13% of the participants died. Coffee helps prevent chronic diseases such as heart disease, and diabetes. Some people believe this and some people believe the opposite. The coffee drinkers in this study are 10% to 15% less likely to die during the study. Cancer was the only major cause of death not associated with coffee consumption. Other causes of death that was associated with coffee are heart disease, lung disease, pneumonia, stroke, diabetes, infections, and injuries/accidents. People don't have to worry that coffee might increase the risk of death. Even a little bit of coffee was significant in living longer. One cup a day was more common that six cups a day proved that drinking coffee was a lower risk of dying 6% for men and 5% for women. The results might not be from the coffee itself, but from characteristics of the people drinking the coffee. Both decaf and regular coffee were used and associated with lower risk of dying.
          I think that the AARP should try to straighten their facts out so that people who want to stay healthy know whether or not to drink coffee or not. For some people, coffee is necessary. If they don't drink coffee they will fall asleep during their day. But for others, coffee isn't necessary so they can decide to drink it or not. I think if it is healthy, scientists and doctors can try to find out what characteristic of the coffee makes it healthy so that they can apply it to more foods. Also more people can drink coffee if it does have a health benefit.

Pacific Reef Sharks Are Vanishing

Almost 90% of reef sharks have disappeared near populated islands such as the main Hawaiian Islands, the Mariana Archipelago, and American Samoa. The reason that sharks near human civilization are disappearing is probably from illegal fishing, incidental killing, and human impact on the fish that the sharks eat for dinner. It also says that human influences have more effect than natural influence, such as warmer water temperatures. I know that many people say that this is destroying the shark environment and it would cause a chain reaction affecting other species, but I think that this could be positive for humans. If these sharks do attack humans, there would be a significantly decrease in shark attacks. That is just my opinion on it.

It Came From the Media: What Prompted the Ruckus about "Pink Slime" And Is It Unhealthy?

        Michael Moss and Amy Hubbard are two people involved in the process of figuring out weather or not the pink slime on meat is unhealthy or not. There is pink slime on beef, but it also could be unhealthy. Pink slime is generally the fat and meat removed from standard meat cute. Scientists that the pink slime could be unhealthy, and there could be unwanted things inside it. It could also be healthy, we just hadn't figured that out yet.
        I think that scientists should develop different methods into finding out weather the pink slime is healthy or not. Some people can be eating the pink slime but it can be extremely unhealthy. But also for the people not eating it, it can be extremely healthy but we just don't know. The soupy meat slime through a thin tube. Then there is some ammonia gas. Afterwards the ammonia gas reacts to form ammonium hydroxide. This decreases acidy and kills any pathogenic germs in the meat. They should find out if the pink slime is healthy or not so it wouldn't be dangerous if we did eat it or if it could help us if we do eat it.

Blog: States of Matter

rIn the past week, we did many labs and learned many things. First, I would like to explain the difference between physical changes and chemical changes. 


a. A physical change is the change of form or appearance of a substance. It's composition or identity does not change. 


b. A chemical change occurs when a substance changes into one or more new substance.


Burning Out A Candle:
The first experiment we did was blow out the fire on the candle with gas. We created a gas by adding baking soda to vinegar and putting it close enough to the flame to diminish any oxygen from the flame, causing it to burn out. The first time, we messed up putting too much of each which overflowed and touched the candle, forcing us to do to again. But in the end, we created a gas which just by placing near the flame, will burn out. This is a physical change because the fire was burned out by the gas, which is a change of form/appearance of the substance.  (Not so sure, but I think it could be a chemical change because after burning it it created a charred substance.)
                                            
                                            Roasting A Marshmallow:
The second experiment we roasted a marshmallow on a bunsen burner. We burnt one part of it, leaving it charred, and the rest was a golden brown (so gooey on the inside). We tasted the charred part, and to it tasted really bad (like solid smoke) but the golden brown was not roasted too much and tasted very good. This is a chemical change because we burnt the marshmallow with fire, causing the charred area to appear, creating another substance.

Burning Sugar: 
We placed sugar into a test tube to burn it. We placed it above the bunsen burner. The color changed very quickly, from white, to carmel, to black. After a while a huge puff of yellow smoke came out of it so we took it down. As Mrs. Rousseau broke the glass, we had to observe it. It looked like black honey, it was dark and smooth and hot. It was also partially gooey. We did not get a good chance to feel it first so we tried to take the glass off of it (causing me to get glass in my finger), and got a better feel of it.

Separating A Mixture

1. Remove water from cup into filter on top of beaker, into the beaker.
2. Use spoon to scoop up the sand and put on tray. Then take beans from cup onto tray.
3. Put 1/4 of the water into flask.
4. Put beaker with water onto hot plate and heat (high).
5. Separate stick and bug from the cup onto the tray.
6. Use magnet to remove metal.
7. Remove beaker from hot plate, which should leave you with salt on the bottom.

The items you should be left with are: Water, beans, sticks, plastic bug, metal, sand, and salt.

Frog Dissection

In class, we dissected a frog named Wendall. First we cut off the skin then had to cut off the muscle under it, while breaking bones in the process. Since it was a female, we took out the eggs. We also looked at the heart which was a clear sac like organ. When the frog breathes, it expands like so:

Lower, was the liver, (when you cut it out, it smelled really bad.) Under the liver was a green little sac, which was the gall bladder. The liver creates bile and the gall bladder stores it. The stomach was next to the liver, and sometimes when you cut it, you can see the frogs last meal. Here is a diagram:



The frog's digestive system and respiratory system are a lot like a humans, with minor changes. When we cut the frog open, I almost immediately knew where everything was. The frogs skin and muscle was very thin, and if you looked on the inside, you can see the blood vessels. We also noticed that in the liver took up a great part of the frog, besides the eggs which also took up the other side. I wondered, why did the liver have to be so big? After we removed the liver and eggs, there wasn't much left. (Sorry about the way this section is spaced out, my computer is having issues.)

I also remember, how we thought the small intestine was the stomach, so we cut it up. We didn't get a chance to get a good look at the intestine though, so I don't really remember what it looks like. After we cut what was actually the stomach, there was nothing in there. It looked like a stitched up kidney bean.

As The Stomach Churns Lab: Part 2: Day 2

In class, we looked at the test tubes from the day before. Test tube A, the egg white clumped and froze. When we put a stirrer in and put it on the Litmus paper, nothing happened. Test tube B, the egg white is gone and the pepsin went to the bottom. When we put it on the litmus paper, it was like sugar on paper, then slowly dissolved into the paper, making it wet. Test tube C, nothing happened to the solution and when we put some on the litmus paper, the paper turned pink. Test tube D, the pepsin went to the bottom, and the acid went to the top, and the egg white shrunk. When we put some on the litmus paper, the paper turned pink.

As The Stomach Churns Lab: Part 1: Day 1

In class, we did a lab using egg whites and hydrochloric acid. We had four test tubes, A. B, C and D.
Each test tube had three pieces of egg whites. We also put something different on top of the egg whites in each test tube. In test tube A, we put 10 mL of enzyme pepsin on top of the egg whites.  There was no immediate reaction in the egg white appearance. In test tube B, we put 5 mL of water, and 5 mL of pepsin. The egg whites started bubbling. In test tube C, we put 10 mL of hydrochloric acid. There was no immediate reaction. In test tube D, we put 5 mL of hydrochloric acid and 5 mL pepsin. The egg white was melting slowly. We then took stirrers then put them in each test tube then on to blue litmus paper. Test tube A solution, there was no immediate reaction. Test tube B solution, the litmus paper gets wet. Test tube C solution, the litmus paper turns pink, because when the hydrochloric acid touches blue litmus paper it turns pink. Test tube D solution, turns pink and for the same reason.

Chicken lab: Class Response

The chicken lab showed us how bones, blood vessels, and organs work. When Mrs. Rousseau pulled one muscle the other one relaxed. When one muscle contracts the other relaxes. Nervous tissue carries messages back and forth between the brain and every other part of your body. Mrs. Rousseau cut off the skin and then through some muscle and then blood came out because she cut through a blood vessel. Then Mrs. Rousseau cut the top of the bone off and then showed us the bone marrow.

Class Response: Diffusion Lab

The diffusion lab was not a success because the corn starch did not turn dark purple when the iodine was put in the beaker.  Mrs. Rousseau put some more iodine in the beaker and as we waited about fifteen minutes. After fifteen minutes we pulled out the bag and the bottom of it was dark purple. The reason this lab did not work is because the plastic bags were too thick and did not allow in the iodine with the corn starch. I think it would have worked if we poked a small hole in the bag and let some of the corn starch out into the beaker.

World's Oldest Panda in Chinese Zoo Dies at Age 34


A Giant panda dies at the Chinese Zoo, at age 34.  The name of the panda was Ming Ming, and she had kidney failure. Giant pandas are among the worlds most endangered species list with about 1600 in the wild, and there are more than 300 captive in China most for breeding to help boost the Giant Panda population. On average, wild pandas live up to 15 years, and the ones in captivity live up to 22.

5/17 Science Blog: Are coffee drinkers less prone to aggressive breast cancer?

I think that it is amazing that drinking coffee can reduce the amount of breast cancer. Before, there was no cure for breast cancer, and then just by some swedish women, there is a way to reduce breast cancer. It is not a cure, but I am almost sure that scientists will figure out a cure for breast cancer, by using the discovery that coffee reduces breast cancer. I think the key is to find out what kind of coffee reduces breast cancer and to find out which ingredient in particular reduces the chance of breast cancer. Sooner or later, I know that there will be a cure for breast cancer.

Titanic Wreck will disappear in 20 years: Being eaten by a superbug

Newly found bacteria was found feasting on the titanic, which is why it will not be there in fifteen to twenty years. I think that it's kind of sad that a boat that has been around since 1912 won't be there. Considering the fact that almost everyone knows the story of the titanic and scientists are just letting it be eaten. I wonder if the scientists that discovered it, do they care at all that it will be gone? If the do, is there some way to stop it that they are willing to try?  Are scientists just going to sit around while bacteria eats the titanic? I think that scientists should try to get rid of this bacteria. They could also learn something new about this iron-eating bacteria.

New DNA Test Shows Hair Color of Crooks

I think that it is very intresting that your spit or blood can tell what color your hair is. Considering the fact that your spit and blood do not at all have a connection with your hair and that you can take one of those samples and test it, the fact that it can show your age, eye color and hair color is very strange. This can help catch a murderer, thief, or another suspect of a crime scene. Just the fact that you can have some DNA of a criminal and scan it you can find out their age, eye color, and hair color and if you already have their name it will help police catch wanted criminals much more efficiently.
